Origins
The company was founded in 1917 and its early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the beginning, Toto manufactured products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. To do this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation that produced ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s, the company began expanding outwards to benefit from sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products of other manufacturers to complement its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.
In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that are water-related. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve its customers and improve profit. The company employed the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example it has a strong tornado flush that is more ecologically friendly than traditional toilets. The company also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. Apart from toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than conventional models.
The first museum of the company opened in 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's seminal products and their development, its group companies (all related to ceramics), history of plumbing and other products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even has a bathroom that includes the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.
Before the formation of Toto members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich and guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
